Luke 5: 4 – 5
When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch. “Master,” Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing! But at Your word, I’ll let down the nets.”
We learn at a very young age, way before we even need to learn about driving, that red means stop. In order to have a clear path on the road and not cause accidents, we have to wait for the green. We can see this clearly when we’re driving, now the trick is seeing these lights in real life situations. Or more so, not getting discouraged when we feel like we’ve been in the yellow or red light waiting for a while!
You’re probably wondering what my statements above and the passages have to do with each other.
In verse four, it states that Jesus gave a command to Simon. But before we even get further into this I want us to focus on the fact that it says “When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon.”
Simon certainly received a command, but he had to listen to Jesus speak first before He ever received a specific command that was extremely clear to him and specifically for him. Yes, Simon did his absolute best prior to Jesus’ command, but he had to listen to Jesus speak first.Simon certainly received a command, but he had to listen to Jesus speak first. Click To Tweet
He did things on his own will and strength but because Jesus wasn’t in on the idea just yet, Simon wasn’t as fruitful. This just caused him to get weary. But the moment Jesus gave the command, bam! He got more than he ever thought he would get.
Sometimes, I feel a lot like Simon.
I have a tendency of getting ahead of God. I tend to act, make decisions, and go out into the world trying to conquer what I want to conquer but end up tired, not being as successful as I’d like to be. I’ve done this so many times from my pursuits, to my daily decisions. If I’m not careful, I can easily do this with my business as well. For example, if I’m not intentional about spending time with God, I can make the mistake of choosing the direction I want to take my business without even asking Him how He wants me to glorify Him to begin with. Is this really the best way to use my gifts and talents? Are there any specific commands or duties He would want from me? If I’m not careful, I can easily bypass the hurting people that God may want me to focus on because I’m seeking my selfish desires.

The Holy Spirit will help you know if God wants you to wait (yellow), put on the breaks for a second (red), and if it’s time for you to act for His kingdom (green). Allowing Him to be the one to command you and choosing to obey His promptings will often prevent us from making daily decisions that will rob us of our peace, joy and strength.
While you’re going through the motions, one of the things I want to you to remember is that YOU ARE CALLED. No matter what, even when you feel like you’ve been in the yellow or red zone for a while, you are called. God called you to do something specifically just for you, you just have to listen for His command. Another amazing truth we can find in this passage is that Simon had so many reasons to doubt Jesus. I mean, let’s face it, if you stayed up all night and you worked your behind off but didn’t catch anything, wouldn’t you feel like the person telling you to let down your nets was crazy? I would. But despite all of that, despite the fact that so many things in the physical world told him it was CRAZY to follow this command, he still said “BUT at Your word, I’ll let down the nets.”
That’s amazing obedience!
He acknowledged the low probability that was evident in the physical world. He acknowledged what he could see in the flesh. But he ALSO acknowledged Jesus’ sovereignty and obeyed regardless of what he saw and felt!
Sometimes, we get ahead of God. Or sometimes we don’t even acknowledge Him at all in our decisions. But when we run back to Him and let Him be our guide, He will give us a command and sometimes, that command will look crazy and unlike everyone else’s. And let’s be real, when our business decisions don’t look like everyone else’s or we don’t hear anyone else doing something similar, it’s a bit terrifying to try and take that leap. It’s a bit terrifying to jump in, wondering in the back in your head, “oh man is this going to work?” “But I don’t see anyone else doing it.” “Is this really profitable….?” “Is there a market for this…?” “What if I fail…?”
What if, what if, what if. Right?
But here’s the thing. You are called. Your passions can bring you into the very mission field that God wants you to be in.Your passions can bring you into the very mission field that God wants you to be in. Click To Tweet
Simply press in on Him and make Him your priority, listen to His promptings, and obey in whatever He tells you to do. God will never fail you.
